There’s no pleasing all, not now, not ever.

It’s obvious that from our interaction with others, there’s no pleasing all that we encounter.

Is there still time to make another attempt without compromising my core values or going contrary to my reliable instincts?

Would it be better to just let the dissenters while leaving enough space between us to keep the peace?

Is this a zero sum outcome? If so can I live with it by having a clear conscience because I did whatever possible given the circumstances?

Ask ourselves those questions, before we move on or decide to give it another try.

Even with our best intentions, there’s no avoiding different viewpoints that range from partial to significant with every possibility that the twain shall never meet.

Seeker not scholar

I would never consider myself a scholar. I wasn’t a standard fit into that mould. I disagree with the conventional paths of education that form the rigours of scholarship progression.
I prefer exploration and remaking convention if established conventions oppress instead of enable.

I would immerse myself in matters if they pique my interest and become as well versed as possible in such subject matter.  I was most inspired to delve into study, observe, support my statements with facts and interpretations based on available material if all that effort could take me closer towards the understanding of the human psyche or a spiritual matter that bridges the earthly and unearthly. I’m as competent as any practitioner and scholar in that sense.

Even if you’re not a scholar, you’re not necessarily a fool. If you have a healthy balance of logic and imagination with a general curiosity about all else around, there’s a lot you can accomplish. You might even surprise yourself.

What comes after the extraordinary?

Even after achieving something extraordinary, what comes after? After encountering miracles what comes after?  If you're a mortal you continue with the business of living of course! Seeing to routine matters and if need be, extraordinary matters along the way. You take it all in stride and do the best you can in the given context. If you're the divine or the saint, you continue with your miracles. If you're the maker or doer of extraordinary things, you go on with whatever you do best. To both witness and originator, life, existence and reason for being resume.

Learn from enduring values

It is strange that there are those who consider a book or composition life changing or inspiring when the person, the source itself is a work in progress and far from complete in that respect. Taking direction and inspiration from someone who isn’t sure of oneself, is subject to a changing stance is a flawed model. Look for universal truths, principles that endure the test of time as your moral compass (if you so wish) and reference. It is only logical that when the navigation system is working well, you’re on the right path. The same goes with drawing direction, example and inspiration in your personal life path.

It takes effort to create and courage to release it

It's always harder upon the creator, the party that has taken the bold step to present one's work to everyone. The party that has taken the step to present one's work is vulnerable to any sort of reception that may come one's way. It requires courage to take that risk and plunge through with resolve.

The audience, critics and reviewers are shielded in the shadows of their collective anonymity, based on their sheer numbers. For those more intellectual ones, reinforced by their scholarly attainments, it is akin to a licence with which to cross examine and go over with a fine tooth comb every aspect of the work in question, presented to them. It does not take much courage to criticise and review. However the difference between a good review and a bad one is reflected by the effort expended and substance behind the verdict.

Even so, I'd rather be the creator and generator. You get used to that vulnerability. You do not feel the sudden surging frisson brought on by the realisation of the impact of this act of risk taking upon one's reputation because it is something that you have thought through thoroughly.

The global warming effect is undeniable. Everywhere there are reports of unusual weather and warmer than average temperatures. Floods, droughts, baking temperatures, falling crop yields, price hikes, suffering of the general populace. Regular weather patterns become irregular. Just the thought that humanity has made a mess of its own habitat is horrifying. I set out to write a poem and ended up with this composition. It's urgent that humanity arrests itself and corrects the course that we have taken. Assuming that there are other extra terrestrial beings, I don't think as intelligent beings, we'd want to be known as the silliest lot in the universe.

Redemption (clarion call to Humanity)

How we overlook might of Creation!
How light and shadow bring fruition!
Wrapped up so with the day’s business
Oblivious to all we bear witness

Circadian cycle of miracles
That render all around possible
Dark and cold, light and heat, come and go
Night curtains set in motion dawn’s glow

We forgot to treasure constancy
We forgot to cherish normalcy
A greater hand overall dictates
Yet the unmindful mind hesitates

Need we wait for nature to rebel
Before we see our errors swell?
There’s still redemption for us in sight
If we waken soon to turn the tide

Artistic Responsibility

If literature can offer a way out of a mess rather than just relating a mess, then art is taken to a higher level. Art imitating life isn’t enough. If art offers a way out of a morass be it human, conceptual, moral etc. when it is bold enough to offer its own solutions, however imaginative, it offers a glimmer of hope to a practical resolution in the future. Art, beyond escapism that offers a solution to particular issues that fascinate the artist, should resonate in some way with its audience.

Hung up over literary awards

Although I have seen many works lauded and such, I’m not inspired as to go out and buy them simply because of their premise. The matter with literary awards is such that they expect writers to be a certain sort of people and a certain style or content.  I am totally done with coming to terms with identity, having to rely on my multi-cultural ethnic origins and squeezing an imagined story of my forefathers for a tale. In fact, if we continue lauding tales of coming to grips with identity based on ethnicity, culture, religion and such, (the sort that I consider depressing literature and all too often adopted as part of text for literary studies) we overlook the greater picture that in seeking a common ground for humanity and an identity for oneself, the more we remove the things that divide us, the more in common we have.

There are only a few books that were best sellers of recent past that truly resonate with me because of their universal values. Why not laud a well-written work of humour or action without particularly placing any emphasis on any particular region, creed, ethnic origin?

I'm hung up over literary awards and parading of authors who wear their ethnic origins as a selling point.

I do not wake up and start thinking what a person of my birthplace, ethnicity or cultural surroundings should do. I think of what a decent being with feelings and a brain ought to do. Most of my major decisions made are bereft of considerations regarding ethnicity, religion, cultural context and gender bias. They only come in when the matter involves them.

I write because I have yet to see such a book written. Regardless if whether I get a prize or not, whether I sell many copies or not. If literary glory means having to write a depressing story and squeeze every ounce out of my exotic origins and imagined stories of my forefathers, I’ll pass up that prize and that glory. I can only be true to myself, not what a panel of judges expect me to be.

Vouch for your own work by rendering it

For compositions involving rendering of written material such as text meant as part of a video voice-over, the composition of text communication is such that the work will have to adhere to the arrangement of a another medium, such as graphical display, musical score and time frame allocated for a particular sequence. For spoken communication, the best form of a test run is the author rendering the written work within the said time frame. From test runs, editing performed wherever applicable, ensures a smoother enunciation of syllables and words from the perspective of the party that is supposed to render the item for the final version. That is a practical method to vouch for your own work. Often just between the four walls and myself, the conclusion is obvious. It is I who had to determine the suitability and practical aspects of my own compositions by rendering it myself before turning it over to the client, which I’ve done so.

Heart of poetry

Poetry in its purest sense is when subject matter is presented through a tight arrangement celebrating rhyme, rhythm, syllable count and expression of subject matter by utilising a fitting display of word choice and placement. For critical appreciation of poetry, the basics such as alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyme, assonance and rhythm are considered. Others such as twist of speech, symbolism, literary and figurative meanings are also considered even though not every element mentioned is necessarily incorporated in every poem.

It is the competent poet who composes with a musical ear for words and in well framed verses.  That is the celebrated heights of poetry. Should that poetry be turned into song depends on its suitability with a piece of music should one exist as the ideal match. The very idea that poetry should mainly be expressed in rhyme form is expressed in rhyme through my own composition.

Bring back the Rhyme

Have we lost our taste for rhyme?
Woven lines succinct, sublime?
Reduced to moving the heart
With words & sounds formed apart?

How ought are we to preserve?
Wherein we do not observe?
Has rhyme being consigned…
Outlaw, outcast, crime?

Times they have greatly turned
Left us fragments of bridges burned
Have we lost the hallowed heart?
That forms the soul of our art?

Free verse and relations

Almost anyone can write free verse if they are indeed inspired put words on paper.
When you string the very best free verses together, you get beautiful prose or prose with poetic overtones.
I’ve written prose. I then broke them into selected fragments and thereby transforming the composition into free verse. Perhaps what I’ve done was extreme but it did reinforce my point. Conversely, I’ve also composed free verse without prior composition of prose. Free verse is closer in style to prose or in its simpler, direct form, closer to spoken communication.
