PRAETOR’S LUNCH. Free Download.

PRAETOR’S LUNCH by Dom. L. M. Wong

This book chronicles the thoughts of an ancient magistrate, a Roman official called a Praetor. Thoughts are expressed in either prose and verses. These thoughts are apportioned for easy reading. Making them seem like little dishes containing food for thought to be mulled over by the mind. Hence the title ‘Praetor’s Lunch’. In this brief compilation, the reader is given a glimpse of life during the Roman Empire from the perspective of an unnamed Praetor.

NATURAE. Free download.

NATURAE. By Dom. L.M. Wong
Naturae owes its style to Shakespearean plays. An interplay of conversations among the natural elements. Anthropomorphism is deployed in this work so that the characters in this play interact as if they were humans. With an Arbiter to preside over discussions, the elements express themselves to all in attendance.

Jottings

It actually helps your creativity and receptiveness to new ideas when you decide to maintain a distance between yourself and your previous works.

You don’t want to write about the same thing if you’re seeking variety. You can still expand on a subject matter, from a different perspective, to keep things fresh.

When there’s been gap between your writing and reading your previous work, it fills you with wonderment. I did that didn’t I? That was a good one! You actually feel entertained by your own work.

Also, the summit of writing ability isn’t the ability to write a novel. Writing a novel is just another form of creativity and expression. You can just as well express in a play, a poem, a short story or an essay. It doesn’t render you a lesser writer compared to a novelist.

Suffer not the young for the vanity of their elders

The young shouldn’t be made to suffer for the vanity of their elders. At the first opportunity I took a stand in my youth and to a certain extent ensured a decent school leaving certificate for myself. I still bristle at the very mention of this injustice when generations later, youngsters are still forcefully made to pursue courses that do not resonate with them. Rather those paths of study were selected by elders with an agenda of their own and not the future of these youngsters at heart. Authority comes with responsibility and expectation of equity. If anyone is unable to practice that, then that person is unworthy of being vested with such authority.

Stop showing off! We can learn from one another.

We will do well to refrain from denigrating the contribution of others, such as other civilisations and other cultures just because they are alien to what we are familiar with. Just because one’s civilisation and culture may have pre-dated others or have conquered others, it does not mean that automatically, everyone else after ought to be disregarded. There is much we can do to learn and share from each other. Rather than shutting off at will and thinking that others have nothing to contribute towards overall progress, open sharing of wisdom and knowledge for the common good will further enrich our societies. Especially so, in an ever increasingly connected global society. Let us not consider others inferior just from an impression or misjudgement. There is much to share and learn and in turn, remake a better version of ourselves compared to what we were before our encounter.
